When that time comes, BTTS can be a nice, simple option. Less known than the more common football bets, you might find yourself wondering what BTTS is exactly. This guide will explain everything you need to know about BTTS and show you strategies you can use if you decide on this type of bet.

What Is BTTS Betting?

The first thing to know when understanding BTTS is what it stands for: both teams to score. Now that it’s simplified, it’s much easier to get to grips with the market. And it is as uncomplicated as it sounds.

In the BTTS market, you simply have to predict whether or not you think both teams will score by the end of the 90 minutes. This market only has three outcomes: no teams score, one team scores or both teams score. If you believe that both teams will score in the match, you bet yes. If you believe only one team or neither team will score, you bet no. BTTS is a very black and white market for when you need a simple betting option.

BTTS Betting In Football

So far, we’ve only mentioned BTTS in reference to football. This is because this market is almost exclusive to this sport. Other ball sports tend to use a points-based system. So while they may score goals, that’s not how the end score is displayed. Therefore, the BTTS market doesn’t quite work for these sports. Other ball sports also tend to be high scorers, whereas the average number of goals per football match is 2.96. As you can imagine, the BTTS market is not suitable for high-scoring sports as it would be incredibly easy to predict the outcome.

When it comes to betting on football, analysing the competing teams for an upcoming match and making predictions is an exciting part of the sport for many punters. There are endless betting opportunities and potential rewards just moments away. But sometimes, selecting a market to bet on or making a prediction is not so easy.

For example, if two teams are equally matched, it can be hard to predict a winner. Or if both teams have a great defence, it can be difficult to know which team will get the most corners. And focusing your efforts on a highly competitive match or getting your predictions wrong can be time-consuming and costly. So, when there are no obvious winners, the BTTS market can be a great option.

One great thing about the BTTS market is that often you don’t have to wait until the end of the 90 minutes to know if you’ve won. As soon as the score reaches a minimum of 1-1, you know if you’ve got a winning or a losing bet. Some matches can be a nail-biter and leave you waiting until the last 15 minutes to find out, but mostly, the anxiety is calmed much earlier in the match.

Another reason why BTTS is loved as a football betting market is that there are a few different types of bets within this market that betting sites offer.

Types Of BTTS Bets

While this may be a straightforward betting market, you still have a few options when placing your bet. Here are the four types of BTTS bets that betting sites in Ireland offer:

  • BTTS Yes or No

This type of BTTS bet is the most simple version. For this bet, you simply just have to predict whether you think yes, both teams will score in the match, or no, only one team or neither team will score during the match. In this bet, you do not need to consider any other element of the match other than goal scoring in its simplest form.

  • BTTS + Win

The BTTS+ Win market takes the above BTTS betting type and adds in another element. In this market, you bet on whether or not you think both teams will score at least one goal during the match, just like in the previous betting type. On top of this, you then also predict a team to win the match. This additional prediction makes the odds for this market much higher than the simpler Yes or No market. It does, however, come with a higher risk as you need to accurately predict the winner of the match too which isn’t always easy, especially if both teams are equally matched.

  • BTTS In Both Halves

As the name suggests, this is the same as the BTTS Yes or No market but focused only on one half of the game, either the first half or the second half. This means that you predict whether or not you think both teams will score in the specified half of the match. This can be a little more interesting than the simple Yes or No market as you can use your knowledge of the teams to predict a more specific outcome. Because you are putting a time constraint on the outcome, the risk is increased. However, because the bet is more specific, the odds are typically higher.

  • BTTS Over/Under

This market merges the BTTS Yes or No betting type with the typical Over/Under market. This means that you can bet on whether or not you think that both teams will score in the match and combine that with a prediction of how many goals will be scored. To do this, the betting site will set a line and you simply have to bet on whether you think the total number of goals will be over or under that line. It is common for betting sites to set multiple lines, each with their own odds. For example, the first line may be 2.5 with the lowest odds, the second line set at 3.5, and the third line set at 4.5 and coming with the highest odds. You then select which line you would like to bet Over/Under on.

Strategies For BTTS Betting

While this may be a straightforward bet, BTTS betting requires certain strategies and considerations just like any other type of bet. Before placing a BTTS bet on football, consider the following:

Look at a team’s record

Each team will have their own history, providing a record of their past performance. Within this, look at how likely they are to score in a match in general, as well as how they have scored against the opposition in the past. If a team’s recent match scores look something like 3-2, 2-1, 2-2, 2-4 then you know it is probably a safe bet to predict that both teams will score during the upcoming match. However, be sure to combine this information with any recent news such as player injury or low morale as this can impact their game play and therefore the end result.

Identify teams with a poor defence

A team’s defensive skills are critical in predicting the likelihood of their opponent scoring a goal. If both teams have a poor defence, you know that there is a strong chance of both teams scoring. If one team has a weak defence while the other has a much stronger one, there is a good chance that only one team will score during this match. Weighing up the skills and strengths of each team’s defence will put you in a better position to make an accurate prediction.

High scoring leagues

Certain leagues are known for scoring a higher than average goal amount per match. This gives a good indication that both teams are likely to score during the match. This typically includes the women’s league and youth leagues. The same can also be applied to teams close to relegation.
